Chaeeun Mun's paintings capture the series of processes in which she confronts, shapes, and deals with the emotions within her heart. Emotions inherently arise sporadic, without distinguishing between light and darkness. But especially she looks more deeply into heavy emotions that tend to accumulate and clump together, such as sadness, discomfort, and helplessness. The girl in the painting, disheveled by the wind, is in a moment of enduring hardship. Also the wind blows away all the things that were suppressing her, and she is in a moment of liberation- like a light feather floating freely. She said, “Dishevelment reveals the naturalness of our existence, requiring no control or refinement. By allowing ourselves to be disheveled, we can break free from the pressure demanding neatness and feel a sense of liberation.”
The playful name Tembo Tempo reflects the artist’s wish to maintain a slow and steady rhythm, like an elephant. Although the world is complex and rapidly changing, he believes that by quietly closing his eyes and listening to his inner voice, he can return to a primal place. All the images he draws are about the joy, strength, confusion, loneliness, and daydreams he feels. By metaphorically demonstrating emotion as a human element through the lyricism of natural objects and their simple and direct compositional power, he hopes to restrain emotional energy while simultaneously reaching the viewers in a more primitive and intense way.
